Τουλάχιστον πέντε άτομα έχασαν της ζωή τους και πάνω από 50 τραυματίστηκαν όταν επιβατική αμαξοστοιχία με περισσότερους από 200 επιβάτες εκτροχιάστηκε το βράδυ της Τρίτης (τοπική ώρα) στη βόρεια Φιλαδέλφεια.

Ο δήμαρχος της Φιλαδέλφεια Μάικκλ Νάτερ επιβεβαίωσε ότι πέντε άτομα σκοτώθηκαν, ενώ στελέχη της Πυροσβεστικής ανέφεραν ότι πάνω από 50 άνθρωποι διακομίστηκαν σε νοσοκομεία της περιοχής, με την κατάσταση πέντε εξ αυτών να κρίνεται σοβαρή.

Σύμφωνα με τη σιδηροδρομική εταιρεία Amtrak 238 επιβάτες και πέντε μέλη του προσωπικού επέβαιναν στο τρένο που πραγματοποιούσε το δρομολόγιο Ουάσιγκτον – Νέα Υόρκη.

Λεπτομέρειες για τα αίτια του δυστυχήματος δεν έχουν γίνει μέχρι στιγμής γνωστές. Επικαλούμενο το FBI, το CNN μετέδωσε ότι δεν υπάρχουν ενδείξεις για τρομοκρατική ενέργεια. Τηλεοπτικά πλάνα που μεταδόθηκαν από το MSNBC δείχνουν δεκάδες διασώστες να μεταφέρουν τραυματίες ανάμεσα στα συντρίμμια του τρένου, αλλά και αναποδογυρισμένα βαγόνια.

There were 243 people on the train, which included 238 passengers and five crew members

Multiple fire engines, ambulances and police cars were deployed on the scene and the fire department said it had requested helicopters for additional lighting

The front of the train was going into a turn when it shook according to individuals who were on the train

'There are train cars overturned, ripped apart, crushed. It's unbelievable,' said Mayor Nutter

One passenger, Don Kelleher, said; 'We were rolling along nice and smooth and then all of a sudden we were on our side.'

FBI agents arrived on the scene soon after the crash and said there is no indication of terrorism in the derailment

The line carried 11.6million passengers in the fiscal year 2014, according to statistics released in October

Michael Black, who was also on the train, said; 'All of a sudden it felt like the brakes were hit hard and then our car. We were third from the last, just slowly started going over to the side. I tried to just brace my arm against it and then just got off'

Rescue workers were seen with flashlights searching next to multiple train cars that had been tipped on their sides

Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia said the scene was an 'absolutely disastrous mess' before adding 'I've never seen anything like this in my life'

Police swarming the Port Richmond area where the crash occurred are telling people to get back

Amtrak hasn't returned a call seeking comment, but wrote on Twitter; 'We are aware of the derailment of Northeast Regional train 188 north of Philadelphia and will provide updates as they become available'
